Jesus the King

03/21/2010

A King from the line of David. That’s what the Jews expected from their Messiah. They were expecting a deliverer from the lineage of David. Herod gave orders to kill all of the infant boys in Bethlehem, the City of David. Herod wanted to eliminate any chance of a rebellion. That’s why he acted so ruthlessly.

In the Genealogy of Jesus that we find in Matthew, we see his lineage traced back to Abraham. The list of descendants is grouped by sets of 14. Several scholars have noted that the name “David” is equal to 14 in you turn the letters into numbers. This is a foreign concept to us because we have a separate lettering and numbering system. The Hebrew language does not. “Aleph”, the first letter, also stands for “one”. “Dalet”make the “D” sound and is the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This makes it also the number 4. “Vav” is the sixth letter of the alphabet. In Hebrew, they dont have vowels. Therefore the name David would be DVD. So D(4) + V(6) + D(4) = 14.  Pretty cool, huh? Although you dont want ot go bible code on people, this is a remarkable link Matthew makes between Jesus and David.

There are dozens of these connection in the gospels, especially Matthew. His goal is to present Jesus as the king of the Jews, so this makes sense.

So maybe i havent sold you on the Bible code thing. In that case, read Matthew and see how many times Jesus is called the son of David, referred to as a shepherd (HELLO!!), or connected to David’s life.

BUT, here’s one that hit me today. We’ve already talked about the numerical symbology of DVD, or David. But what does his name mean? Maye there’s a way to connect him to David this way…

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

David’s name means Beloved. Jesus is called the Son of David and the Beloved Son of God. Jesus is the new David, the beloved of God and the King of the Jews.
